Wauke or paper mulberry, whose bark is used for kapa, was meticulously cultivated by our ancestors. Then, the process of taking that bark and turning it into kapa was long and laborious.  It took skill, patience and resilience. However, the cloth it produced was versatile, resilient and beautiful.

When we talk about “tapa print”, this is my 21st centurty interpretation.  It’s the literal leaf of the wauke.  It’s a deconstructed tapa print.  The kaona of this design is what has guided the other designs in this collection.
